The years 2020 and 2021 will forever be remembered as the time we all got way too acquainted with our sweats and messy bun. At first it was fun and slouchy-cool was a vibe, but now, if we’re honest, the novelty has worn off a little and we’re ready for our glow up. Whatever self-care means to you, whether it’s eating healthily, or getting your nails done it’s important to recognise when you’re not feeling yourself. If you’ve been feeling ‘off-ish’ recently, it’s time to put that extra effort into making sure you’re living your best life and that often starts with how you feel about yourself. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune and you don’t need to make major changes, unless you want to, of course. 

It’s up to you to identify what you need to get out of your funk and start glowing again, but to help you get started, we’ve put together some helpful tips on how to kick-off your glow up.

1- Drink more water 

We’ve put this one first for a reason. From helping kidney function, to preventing wrinkles, the benefits of consuming water are seemingly endless. Keeping your body hydrated helps it flush out nasty toxins and helps your skin maintain its elasticity – water is basically an acne-fighting, anti-aging elixir. Women should be consuming about 2.7 litres a day for optimum results, so get yourself a cute bottle and let’s get hydrated!

2- Find a skin care routine that works for you

We know that you know, that $2 cleanser you’re using dries your skin out, so why are you still using it?! If you haven’t found it yet, we promise your perfect skin care routine exists, it just takes a bit of work to nail it down. Take some time to experiment with new products, trawl the internet for reviews and even visit a dermatologist. You deserve to have glowing, healthy skin and you’ll thank us when your make-up goes on like a dream.

3- Get your body moving

A glow up doesn’t mean getting rock-hard abs or deciding your training for a marathon (unless they’re your goals, of course!). If part of the reason you’re in a funk is because you’ve been spending too much time indoors or sat down, step one of your glow up journey is to move your body everyday – preferably outdoors. Don’t underestimate the power of walking, but if you’re looking for something more intense, joining a class is a great way to help schedule exercise into your routine.

4- Take a rain-check on your diet

We’re not talking crash diets and calorie counting, we’re talking healthy relationships with food and fuelling your body with the nutrients it needs to thrive. If you’ve been lacking energy recently, try ditching the take outs and pizza for breakfast for a week and see how it makes you feel. Adding just one extra portion of fruit and vegetables to your meals every day will also benefit your skin, hair and energy levels.

5- Clear out your wardrobe

You don’t have to buy an entire new closet full of clothes to feel like you’ve had a style refresh. If you’ve spent the majority of the last year in your comfies, we bet when you delve into your closet again, you’ll discover a whole load of loved-but-forgotten pieces and items that just aren’t ‘you’ anymore. Clear out everything that’s had its time and start wearing those super-flattering jeans again, you’ll feel like you’ve had a fashion glow up without spending a dime. 

6- Clear out your make-up

Did you know that all make-up has a use by date? That’s right, there’s a reason why your foundation suddenly feels like cement and your bronzer now leaves patches all over your cheeks. Out of date products are, firstly, not good for your skin and secondly, aren’t going to make you look and feel your best. Look out for the expiry date symbol on your products, which looks like a little tub with a number inside it – that number is how many months the make-up is safe to use for. If it’s out of date, replace it.

7- Take care of your hair

If you’re usually a quick shampoo, conditioner and go kinda’ gal, then as part of your glow up, we challenge you to make a fuss out of your locks. We’re talking hair masks, leave-in conditioners, oils and bouncy blow-dries. It might take longer than your usual towel dry, but having hair that looks great will make you feel amazing. Whilst you’re at it, take a look at your hairbrush. If the bristles are broken, it’s time to invest in a new brush to tame your locks and prevent unnecessary breakage. 

8- Book a beauty appointment

Whether you don’t feel like ‘you’ unless your nails are perfectly manicured or you’ve been putting off cutting your hair short for the longest time, this is your sign to book that appointment. Even if you don’t usually spend money on beauty treatments, treat yourself! This is a glow up after all. A spray tan will make you remember what it feels like to have that glowy vacation look and an eyelash lift will have you looking bright-eyed and bushy-tailed once again – whatever your treatment of choice is, you’ll thank yourself when you look in the mirror and feel like you again.

Think of your glow up as a form of self-care and something which will be totally unique to you, depending on your needs. Whether you’re going all out with a whole new look or are just performing some lifestyle tweaks, an intentional glow up, no matter how big or small, will put a spring back into your step, once again.
